The eighth story in Jia and Coco’s Korean Journey takes readers into summer—a season filled with warm sunshine and refreshing water play. This illustrated Korean-language learning book is designed to help international learners and young readers build their vocabulary around the theme of summer and progress naturally to reading short, rhythmic sentences. Learners explore twelve essential summer words and expressions—including sweat, the rainy season, cicadas, rainbows, sudden showers, sunflowers, water play, watermelons, and the shade of trees—through charming character illustrations. In the sentence-reading section, short, musical sentences such as “여름이 왔어요” (“Summer is here”) and “매미가 맴맴 울어요” (“The cicadas sing maem-maem”) help learners develop a natural sense of Korean rhythm. The book follows a three-step learning structure: Word Reading → Word Cards → Sentence Reading This gradual progression allows learners to expand their language skills without feeling overwhelmed. Korean sound-symbolic words such as maem-maem (맴맴), jjaeng-jjaeng (쨍쨍), songol-songol (송골송골), cheombeong-cheombeong (첨벙첨벙), dungsil-dungsil (둥실둥실), and cheolsseok (철썩) also help learners experience the distinctive sounds and expressive qualities of the Korean language. The book was planned and written by Lee Myungsook, an elementary school teacher and author with twenty years of experience in Korean literacy education. Drawing on her understanding of child development and classroom experience, she created this volume as part of a consistent twenty-book series built around a shared world and the cycle of the seasons.
