I taught them consonants and vowels, drilling worksheets and dictation daily starting with batchim-free words, but only one out of five children learned to read, while I couldn't even tell what level the others were at. Watching children who forgot overnight what they'd memorized the day before, I began to face a fundamental question: "Am I really teaching this the right way?" That question led me to search out books and papers on Hangul education, and in particular, through the many online resources analyzing the Hunminjeongeum Haerye, I came to understand the principles behind Hangul's creation. Hangul consonants are not arbitrary symbols. They are scientifically designed letters, each modeled on the shape the vocal organs make when producing that sound. ㄱ came from the shape of the tongue root blocking the throat; ㄴ from the tongue touching the upper gum ridge; ㅁ from the shape of the mouth; ㅅ from the shape of a tooth; and ㅇ from the shape of the throat. And as sounds grew stronger, a stroke was added to each: ㄱ became ㅋ, ㄴ became ㄷ and then ㅌ, and ㅁ became ㅂ and then ㅍ. Then, during my sabbatical research year, I studied further, painted the illustrations myself in watercolor, and edited the book, completing 《Ganada Hangul Textbook: Student Edition》, which the classroom needed. The vowels follow the standard Hangul order. 《 Ganada Hangul Textbook: Preschool Edition 》 follows the same principles as the Student Edition, but features larger text and simpler explanations tailored to young children.
