School is the first “small society” that children encounter as they grow. The sixth story in Jia and Coco’s Korean Language Journey begins with Jia and Coco walking through the school gate side by side. From there, they move between the classroom and the playground, experiencing a day at a Korean elementary school. The book begins with words related to school spaces and relationships, such as “classroom,” “teacher,” and “friend.” It then naturally expands to school supplies such as “bag,” “book,” “notebook,” “pencil,” and “eraser,” as well as objects found inside and outside the classroom, including “desk,” “chair,” “blackboard,” and “playground.” Beginning with this volume, learners move beyond simply naming objects and develop a practical sense of language through short expressions used in everyday school life, such as “I take a book out of my bag,” “I write with a pencil,” and “I get along well with my friends.” Each word is presented in large, handwritten-style lettering, accompanied by a warm and friendly illustration. A consistent three-sentence pattern—identifying the word, describing an action, and expressing a feeling or state—helps both young children and learners of Korean as a foreign language read along with ease and naturally acquire essential Korean sentence patterns.
