『가나다 한글교본 쓰기』(Ganada Hangeul Workbook: Writing) A First Book, and the Question That Followed Facing children in the classroom who had not yet mastered Hangul, I felt keenly the need for a textbook made for them. Over my 2014 sabbatical year, I devoted myself to researching this problem, and in 2015 published 『가나다 한글교본』(Ganada Hangeul Textbook), for toddlers and students. It was my first published textbook — a reading textbook. After publishing it, teaching children brought a new need to light. Reading alone wasn't enough. Children needed to learn by writing with their own hands. In answer to that need, I completed 『가나다 한글교본 쓰기』(Ganada Hangeul Workbook: Writing) in 2016. This book's consonant learning order (ㄱ ㄴ ㅁ ㅅ ㅇ) was designed by returning to the original creation principles of Hunminjeongeum, drawing on scholarly papers, research, and the Hunminjeongeum Haerye (the original commentary). In Hunminjeongeum, five basic consonants were shaped after the position of the speech organs, and additional consonants were formed by adding strokes to represent increasing sound intensity (for example, ㄱ → ㅋ, or ㄴ → ㄷ → ㅌ). At the time, most textbooks on the market followed the conventional consonant order (ㄱㄴㄷㄹㅁㅂㅅㅇ); this book took the unusual approach of arranging consonants according to that original phonetic logic. Today, that approach is widely used, including in the 2022 revised national curriculum. The vowel order, by contrast, does not follow the creation principle but instead follows the conventional Hangul order (ㅏ ㅓ ㅗ ㅜ ㅡ ㅣ) — the same order used in current textbooks — so it aligns naturally with school curriculum progress. This makes the book a practical writing workbook ready for immediate use in first-grade classrooms. About the Author Hongsol (pen name; real name Lee Myeong-suk) drew on years of experience in elementary classrooms to design every stroke order with children's hand sensitivity and learning psychology in mind. Grounded in research into original Hunminjeongeum texts, she introduced a rare approach in 2016: organizing consonants according to their creation principle.
